Jake Gyllenhaal assumes the role of Prince Dastan in Disney’s upcoming big-budget movie adaptation of Ubisoft’s video game of the same name. While we can sort-of, maybe forgive the fact that Gyllenhaal doesn’t look anything like a Persian prince, we can’t help but wonder why everyone has a British accent. Is British the new default for “foreign?”

Anyways, a new trailer is out that gives us hope that this movie won’t bomb like the rest of the video game-inspired filmshit out there.

Director Sam Raimi said that a fourth Evil Dead is in the works during his Drag Me To Hell panel at this year’s Comic-Con.

“I’d love to make another Evil Dead picture. And actually that’s in the wheelhouse. I’d like to work on it with my brother Ivan [Raimi] when he comes up next week.“

A few years ago Variety reported on a rumor that Sam Raimi would be resurrecting the Evil Dead series with a remake of the first film, but Raimi’s mention at Comic-Con seems to hint at something more than a remake. He also hinted at wanting to work with Bruce Campbell again, which means everyone’s favorite B-movie actor may reprise his role as the boomstick wielding, deadite killing Ash.

Though the set-up appears to be that of a videogame, the cartoon actually holds closer to that of a Japanese-style anime.

The world fell into chaos after the Fire Nation declared war on all other tribes, and the one remaining hope is a being that encompasses the mastery and balance of all of the elements. This unifying presence has been lost to the world for over a century until two siblings of the Northern Water Tribe discover a young boy named Aang, the new Avatar.

Aang’s playful yet insightful nature endears him to his rescuers Katara and Sokka. With his newfound friends and his flying bison, Appa, Aang embarks on a quest to realize his past and his present place in the world. And thus, the viewer is introduced to a magical fantasy-comedy that showcases awe-inspiring martial art sequences and includes characters that you will ultimately find close to your heart.

Indeed the series, which first aired on Nickelodeon in February 2005, isn’t a one-dimensional display of cartoon violence. The fantasy adventure includes a spiritual underlining that runs throughout its plot accompanied by light-hearted, meaningful, dialogue.

With its epic action, the most captivating feature of Avatar is it characters. From a flying lemur named Momo to a redemptive Fire Nation Prince named Zuko, the characters are the essential element of the series.

Here’s a recap of essential characters in the show:

Aang (The Avatar) is the last airbender who must now holds the world on his shoulders as he must masters the four elements, uncover his mysterious past, and ultimately defeat Fire Lord Ozai. It is his responsibility to confront the Fire Lord and reunite the four nations.

Katara: As the last waterbender of her tribe, she holds a deep resentment towards the Fire Nation for murdering her mother in an early raid. With her dark past, she can only hope to end the Fire Nation’s conquest by assisting Aang in his quest as the Avatar.

“Flying Kickapow!”

Sokka is a quirky, man of science, whose bottomless supply of awkward, lame jokes ultimately leave an impression on the viewer. After his father left to fight the Fire Nation, Sokka watched over his tribe as a warrior. He later reunites with his father and soon after, rescues him from a fire nation prison.

Prince Zuko is the son of Fire Lord Ozai and banished failure of the Fire Nation. Early in the series, he is obsessed with reclaiming his honor by capturing the Avatar. Struggling to deal with his self-pity and anger, he soon grows sympathetic to the people the Fire Nation has terrorized. He then decides to leave his father and his nation to join Aang on his quest to stopping Ozai and his rampage.

Princess Azula is Zuko’s younger sister and serves as the main rival and one of the major antagonists in the series. Self-centered and merciless, she is a sadistic, calculating, sociopath. She holds no sympathy toward familial ties other than her loyalty to her the Fire Lord.

“Yip, Yip”

Appa is Aang’s childhood friend and flying bison. Appa is Aang’s only connection to his past, so when Appa is taken by sand benders, Aang desperately searches for him, nearly unable to control his emotions.

Avatar State: Though not a physical character, the Avatar State allows Aang to surge with power, enabling him to perform insurmountable bending abilities. The Avatar State requires Aang to experience harsh emotions to enable and ultimately symbolizes Aang’s struggle in protecting his loved ones through the destruction of others. To fully harness its power however, Aang must dispose of earthly bonds, thus leaving his friends behind.

THE SERIES is now coming to a close as the final three episodes are to be showcased as a feature film titled “Sozin’s Comet.” The feature has Aang and his friends confront Fire Lord Ozai and, hopefully, defeat him before Sozin’s Comet nears the planet, boosting the strength of the Fire Nation and allowing Ozai to easily finish his conquest of the world.

The challenge of the American road trip novel is in how to approach the various cross-sections of pure, domestic lifestyles and pull the veil to reveal something strange yet familiar about the places around us. Even harder is meeting that challenge and finding an honesty so outrageous and funny you wonder whether you should fear stepping off your lawn. Warren Ellis takes the convention of a traditional travel story and finds that you can indeed take the seedy underbelly of middle America and blow it to epic, cartoonish levels in Crooked Little Vein.

Ellis’ debut novel, just released in paperback, is a simple idea of a little story framed around a central mystery. The journey of main man Mike McGill, a detective with a knack for putting up with the bizarre and absurd, is commissioned by a heroin-addicted Chief of Staff to track a long-lost mythical document designed to return the nation to a moral standard: an alternate Constitution of the United States. Armed with government funding and a tempermental sidekick he finds on the street, Mike begins a descent into the surreal perversions and new sexualities that redefine what it means to live in a free America.

Ellis brings his graphic novel style to prose and makes for a tightly constructed book; it is a short read, but the language is clear, the dialogue smart and fast without ever missing the mark. Any long-time fans of his comic book work like Transmetropolitan or Fell know how well he can dig and explore the strangest ideas we don’t even know exist. Trailing the characters across the land is like finding an exhibit on Internet subculture and all the dirty public secrets, from Godzilla porn to saline injections to more concepts too wild and disturbing they have to be true. What can be viewed as shock value is simply an amused commentary of the new mainstream as bred through private decadence living out in the open amongst the websites we’ve never seen. The best part is that you don’t just accept how real these twisted strangers are, you realize just haven’t met them yet.

What is more important is that Ellis makes you care about these people and that is where the promise of his writing starts to show. The drama is so irreverent yet touching, particularly when the story takes a turn for Las Vegas and straight to the last page, that you can’t help but find the prospect of the lead’s sanity cracking to be so romantic. What Ellis does is get you to feel so fed up and angry with the way we’ve let the world turn out that somehow we can find the beauty in all the weirdness of our perverted neighbors. A statement on where we’ve come to as a population, these peppered insights enhance our relation with these lead characters that you almost want to endure the magnifying glass on the world a few more times just to see how else they will snap. What we get are threads left short for readers to muse on before moving to the next flash of ideas to play with, and so what could have been a deeper sort of story is lost to making sure we do not desensitize ourselves too much, or else we can’t be surprised in future works.

New to the paperback edition are supplementary materials to the initial release of the book and other hilarious samples of Ellis’s style. Compiled from online interviews and notes by the author himself, you are given a strong sample of his wider sense of humor and talent as a lecturer. Very rare that a cooking lesson can make a second read be welcomed, along with a soundtrack listing that inspired the project. A sharp, sweet little story designed for the underground, this premiere hints at a fresh voice with fresh things to say, whether we need to know them or not, and out of morbid curiosity we will want it a lot.

Zombies have been all-the-rage these past couple of years. We’ve seen remakes of classic zombie films, tips for surviving a zombie apocalypse, and even anti-zombie equipment available for purchase. With that said, yet another zombie movie is in the works—this time being reanimated from a comic book corpse into a silver screen banshee. ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction (why do zombie movies always have to have some underlying political commentary?), a comic book written by Underworld screenwriter Kevin Frevioux, has been picked up by Benderspink for big screen treatment. On paper it sounds like a neat idea for yet another zombie movie:

“ZMD is the story of a new government weapons program that drops zombies, designed to be photosensitive and dissolve by a set time, into war zones at night to destroy the enemy population. But after one fails to self-destruct in the Middle East, a team of elite soldiers must enter hostile territory to stop a growing zombie army.”

It might be too cliché and not transparent enough with its political commentary, but zombie-flick fans will probably eat this one up. As long as the zombies don’t eat them first. (Har har, see what I did there?)

Orson Scott Card’s legendary novel “Ender’s Game” is being resurrected (was it ever dead?) in comic book form. This was announced a while ago, but the comic will be making its premiere at this week’s Comic-Con in San Diego. Entertainment Weekly was given a glimpse of the cover art, which we have borrowed for your approval. While a comic is a good idea, we can’t help but wonder when they’ll get around to making the Ender’s Game movie that was talked about a few years ago and was supposed to be finished in 2008. Oh, movie industry, how you tease us so.

As for the comic book cover, I hope the cover art is no indication of what the rest of the comic looks like. I don’t think Ender’s Game fans would be too pleased to have their beloved Ender turn out to be a stiff and two-dimensional comic book hero.

I would hope whatever they come up with for the Family Guy movie would not be appropriate for the show. That would almost defeat the purpose–I demand an abundance of uncomfortable pop-culture references that make the squishies out there squirm! We’ll have to wait and see what he has in store for us.

Say it ain’t so, Marvel! Word on the street is that Marvel is ditching the team of writers (Mark Fergus, Hawk Ostby, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway) responsible for Iron Man in favor of rookie writer/director Justin Theroux for its sequel. This comes as a surprise for most of us, with Iron Man being as popular as it is. Marvel found the formula for success and now they’re changing the variables around; for better or for worse is yet to be seen.

Nevertheless, Marvel is in final negotiations with Theroux who has writing credit on the upcoming Tropic Thunder. He made his directoral debut with last year’s Dedication, which nobody saw and nobody really liked. But he has a ton of acting credits (most supporting roles), so maybe hidden in all of that, uh, acting “talent”, he has some writing talent as well.

Thom Beers, best known for his pointless-but-awesome (manly, even!) Discovery Channel series’ Ice Road Truckers and Deadliest Catch is moving on to larger pastures with his first feature film, Chopper Zombie. It will debut as a graphic novel at this year’s Comic-Con and we’ll be sure to grab some more information. The graphic novel was made with the intention of going straight-to-film. His reason for making the film:

“We’ve been doing series’ like ‘Biker Build-Off’ and ‘Monster Garage’ because I love choppers. My son Max, who’s ten, loves zombies. He told me that choppers and zombies go together – so, we gotta do it! Choppers and zombies. Creating a graphic novel and taking it right into a feature is a truly awesome experience, and wait until you see this chopper at Comic-Con.”

Beers’ son does have a point: choppers and zombies do seem to go together, in some weird, subculturally charged way. We were hoping for something more along the lines of zombies and helicopters, but you can’t always get what you want. Maybe next year.
